10 Facts We Now Know About Sunscreen

With summer on the horizon, we know it’s time to slather on the sunscreen and reapply, but how much do we really know about this magical lotion that’s said to protect against sunburn and prevent skin cancer? For all the mysteries that still remain about the sun and how it affects us, we can rest assured knowing that we have these 10 facts about sunscreen covered:

1. There is No Evidence that the Chemicals in Sunscreen are Not Safe: Despite ongoing controversy over the safety of the chemicals in sunscreens, most scientists and doctors agree that there is no evidence that sunscreen ingredients are harmful to humans. The argument that sunscreen ingredients are carcinogenic, block vitamin D or alter the body’s hormone system will require further research and experimental studies before any conclusions are drawn.
2. The Higher the SPF Number, the Smaller the Difference: It’s a common misconception that a higher SPF number means you are doubly or triply protected. A higher number does indicate more protection, but it doesn’t give you two to three times as much protection as one with an SPF 15. Sunscreens with SPF 15 filter out roughly 93 percent of UVB rays and SPF 30 sunscreens filter about 97 percent. The protection slightly increases as the SPF number gets higher, but only by one percent (98) for SPF 50 and two percent (99) for SPF 100 sunscreens. The fact is no one sunscreen will protect you completely.
3. SPF Numbers Only Refer to UVB Ray Protection: The sun protection factor (SPF) number on sunscreens only measures protection against UVB rays, the skin-burning rays. There is no current FDA-approved rating system for measuring protection from UVA rays, which cause aging of the skin. To ensure coverage against UVB and UVA rays, you should use a "broad-spectrum" sunscreen, or one that contains avobenzone (Parsol 1789), ecamsule, zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
4. There’s a Difference Between Waterproof and Water-Resistant Sunscreen: Sunscreens that are labeled "waterproof" or "water-resistant" are slightly different in their chemical makeup and water tolerance. Water-resistant sunscreens can maintain their SPF level after 40 minutes of water exposure, and waterproof sunscreens can maintain their SPF level after 80 minutes of water exposure, according to the FDA. If you’re plan on being in the water or participating in outdoor activities, you should choose a water-resistant or waterproof sunscreen for optimal protection.
5. Sunscreen Does Not Cause Vitamin D Deficiency: For years, people have blamed sunscreen and dermatologists’ pleas to stay out of the sun as the leading cause for vitamin D deficiency in Americans. However, we now know that there is little to no evidence that shows sunscreens cause vitamin D deficiency, and people can get the recommended amount of vitamin D from other sources than just the sun, such as taking dietary supplements and eating foods like salmon, milk and eggs.
6. Sunscreen is Not Fail-Safe: We now know that sunscreen is not fail-safe because it is not a guaranteed protection against all of the sun’s harmful rays. There is also no supporting evidence that sunscreens protect you from developing malignant melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer. Sunscreen alone will not fully protect you from the sun or from developing skin cancer. In addition to wearing sunscreen, you should also seek shade, wear protective clothing, avoid peak hours of sun exposure and monitor the UV index.
7. One Ounce of Sunscreen is Needed to Cover Your Body: We now know that one ounce, equivalent to a full shot glass, is the recommended amount of sunscreen needed to cover your exposed skin. You should apply sunscreen liberally and reapply every two hours, especially after perspiring, swimming or towel-drying. Sunscreen is something you definitely don’t have to go easy on. Don’t forget to protect the often-missed parts of the body, like the lips, ears, hands, feet, neck and scalp.
8. Everyone Should Use Sunscreen, Regardless of Skin Color: People of all races and ethnicities are at risk for developing skin cancer, and should wear sunscreen to protect themselves from UV radiation. We know that people with fair skin and a large number of freckles and moles have a greater chance of burning and developing skin cancer, but people with darker skin can also burn and develop skin cancer as well. Dark-skinned individuals are also more likely to be diagnosed with skin cancer in the later stages when it is more dangerous and could be fatal.
9. Sunscreen is Needed in All Types of Weather: Whether it’s sunny, cloudy or snowing outside, you still need sunscreen to stay protected all year long. Ultraviolet rays can do a significant amount of damage even when the sun is not at its hottest. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, people experience some of the severest sunburns because they did not protect themselves on cloudy days, where up to 40 percent of the sun’s radiation can get through. So, whether you’re hitting the slopes or riding the waves, you need to wear sunscreen in every season and every type of weather.
10. Sunscreens Have a Maximum Shelf Life of Three Years: According to the FDA, all sunscreens have to be stable at their original strength for at least three years, unless otherwise indicated by an expiration date. Sunscreens lose their effectiveness after three years, especially when the bottle is exposed to direct sunlight, extreme changes in temperature or left open. Sunscreen is said to have a shelf life of three years. However, if you’re using the appropriate amount of sunscreen daily, you shouldn’t have bottles of sunscreen sitting around for more than one year!

After devouring the Bazaar piece in a doctor's waiting room one day ( awaiting a mammogram, can you say, so not fun, but so happy I did it this year.  WEAR A THYROID GUARD!) First, let me give you the --

Here's the thing.  Youth don't come easy.  Rand Rusher is right. Pretty does, er, hurt.

Dr. Honrado asked me about my pain threshold before we started. I scoffed. Who me?  I've had 5 hip replacement surgeries, a double hernia operation, 2 kids and 2 C-sections to top it off.  If anyone can deal with pain, it's me.  "Because you can take a Percoset before we start if you want."  Percoset is pussies, I say.   Bring on my new face and bring it on now!

That was a mistake.  As the zapping begun, I started to liken it to being, well, tasered.  Or more like, a lion being tasered to it's death.  Make that a whale. 

"Wow! This is no joke!" I said, doing my best to stay zen - yoga breathing, remote viewing, you name it, whatever I could do to get my mind off the zap-zap-zapping.  Dr. Honrado was so fantastic though, counting down the zaps for me and making small talk about kindergarten schools.  I breathed, deeply.  He zapped.  My legs twitched like road kill.  I was happy I had said yes to the shot of Toradol (injected Advil, I think) in my arm before hand.  I persevered, pulverizing  those mushy squeeze balls and kept my eyes on the prize.  I mean, what's a few minutes of discomfort (maybe 45 for my lower face and neck) for taking ten years off and staving off, even longer (I mean, that should happen when I'm like 55?! 60?), those words I dare not speaketh (facelift)??

Yup, that cruel beeatch Lady Time has half of Hollywood's 40 year-olds looking like extras from The Chipmunks.  Plumped and poofed like a Sofa-u-Love showroom.

Not gonna happen to me. Sure, I could just let it all go and head fearlessly into the world of a Woman Overlooked. The hideous facts are that as women age here in America, we start to become invisible members of society. The more lines on our face, the less we are seen, accounted for.  As our beauty fades, and by beauty I mean youth,  we start to lose our value. Our collateral.  A woman's youth is her stock and when she loses it, she she can no longer trade.  Scary. Upsetting.  And totally effed up.  Aging is so complicated and challenging a journey for us, it's no wonder books, essays and college courses in feminist theory are taught about it.  The socio-political analysis of female aging and the fear of aging is profound.  

Folks, it's too deep to get into a whole seminar about it here. Too many questions, angles and opinions - is it the way we are perceived by men that creates and perpetuates this phenomenon?  Is it cultural-centric/specific?  Is there scientific data to support why this exists socially?   Yadayadayada til manana. 

So let's get down to brass tacks. One part of me wants to say F.U. to this societal bullshit and embrace Nature in all her glory - bring it on, I say, and I'll only grow more beautiful inside.  But who am I kidding.  I live in L.A.  We eat vanity for breakfast. At 7 am you can't find an empty bike in a spinning class from We-ho to Santa Monica.  On every Pilates Plus reformer there's a girl wondering how many calories she's burning in each pose.  We are all fighting the good fight. To be younger, fitter and feel better than we did in college.  

So, I surrender.  And admit it.   Aging is just...so not fun.

And that's why I'm here, as a guide so we can face the bitch head on together, gather our master plan and psyche her fat ass out.  As seamlessly as possible, at that.  Look, I don't want to disappear. Maybe if I was Hilary Clinton powerful, I wouldn't have that fear, because the world would be forced to look at me, to listen to what I have to say...(Oh here, I go, I don't wanna get political, I just wanna get to the goodies for you!!)  (Not to mention, what DO I have to say?)

( And, btw, even if I was Hilary, I'd still be tweaking my shit anyway.)

But gang, the truth is, I just want to look natural, elegant as I get deeper in my 40's... not 25, but kick ass hot and hovering somewhere in my....late 30's??  For now?  Is that too much to ask for?  I'm not at all afraid of a line or two, a few light creases, sure, I'm down! I want my face to move.  To tell the story of my life.   And I don't want D.S.L.'s either.  Blech.  But I don't feel comfortable with sag, jowls and that thing hanging under my neck someone said, "come Thanksgiving, you better run."

But the Exilis laser is now becoming my baby.  I feel like Angelina must have felt seeing baby Zahara for the first time. I just want to take it home with me forever and love it like a child of my own. But I can't cuz it's like a $70,000 machine and I could never find clothes to fit it.  Let alone, it would stick out like a sore thumb amongst my other two kinder.

I DID it.

I mean, almost.  (It's only 3:42.  No, 3:43...and counting).

Day 3 of Izo Cleanze and let me tell you - I get it now, folks.

Cuz yesterday I didn't so much.   They say day 2 of a cleanse can be hardest and it was. My head was pounding on and off and not from being hungry, friends.  I was never hungry for a minute on the cleanse because there is simply SO MUCH to drink (in fact both days I couldn't even finish everything!)

It was the caffeine withdrawal that was sending me into a tizzy.  But when I woke up today, I was totally jazzed and ready to go.  I'm talking Freaky Super Energized.  I've only ever been that jazzed when I'm on my 2nd cup of coffee at 6:45 am.

On my first two days of the cleanse I just wanted to sleep and eat (and guess what,  I DID eat, some salads and raw foods)   And sleep I did.  And it was amazing.  I passed out at 8 and had the best sleep I've had in months.   Same with last night.

You heard me.  A full on lecture about the curious nature of how fat lives in our bodies, how the skin sits on top of it and alas, a dissertation on the mother of all body-nightmares - cellulite. 

The brilliant Lynn Banfi who is more schooled on this subject than a PhD., took me on a visual tour not only of the layers of our bodies, overhead projections and all, but also on a tour of the thousands of bodies she has rid of the most varmant-y skin plague of all - CELLULITE.

Hyaluronic Acid- Improving your skin inside and out In my quest to always stay on top of the latest advances in anti-aging medicine, I recently attended a great seminar on advances using bio-identical hormones and supplements to maintain a youthful energy and a youthful appearance! While there, one of the guest lecturers talked a bit about his recommendation for patients looking to brighten up and improve their complexions. So I tried his suggestion myself and have seen really wonderful results. 

His recommendation: taking hyaluronic acid (HA) supplements by mouth. What is hyaluronic acid? It’s a natural substance found throughout our bodies. The two main areas HA is found are your joints (where HA lubricates the cartilage) and in your skin. HA draws water to itself and keeps your skin nice and plump while also helping to repair your skin from sun damage. Though that tan looks great, those UV rays are destroying your HA levels. Not only as we age, does our skin accumulate sun damage (lowering our HA levels), we produce less and less HA in our bodies. HA has a very short-half life in our skin (which means we need to make a constant supply). Its ability to attract water keeps the areas between our skin cells from the deepest layers of our skin to the very top layers plump and moisturized. Wrinkles are less visible; skin is brighter, softer and fuller. 

Many of you may be familiar with Restylane or Juvederm facial fillers. Both these products are injectable HA. HA is also injected into large joints for patients with severe arthritis. Recently there have been a slew of beauty products coming on the market that contain HA for topical use. While HA gives beauty products a nice consistently, the molecule is too big to penetrate the skin. The smooth feeling that these products give to your skin are due to HA sitting on top of your skin creating a barrier. Unfortunately, when you wash the product off, the HA is goes too. The LA Times recently wrote a nice piece on the recent popularity of HA.

Unlike many supplements out there, HA does have clinical research showing skin improvement in subjects taking it orally*. Hyaluronic Acid is widely available at health food stores, and pharmacies. The starting dose I use for skin improvement is a 100mg HA capsule a day for one week followed by 50mg of HA a day from that point on. Most people report an improvement in 2-4 weeks! DR. KRIS PRESSMAN - BIO IDENTICAL HORMONE THERAPY

I recently met with Dr. Kris Pressman to discuss BIO IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY - an exciting, hot topic in the world of regenerative and restorative medicine. I have been fascinated by this subject for a while. DHEA (Dehydrepandrosterone)      By age 40, DHEA has declined markedly. Replacement results in immune enhancement, therefore making DHEA extremely important in cancer and infection prevention. DHEA is a precursor to the sex hormones and is therefore an important building block in the production of these hormones. DHEA helps the breakdown of fats and cholesterol, while reducing the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.      

ESTROGEN      Replacement with natural estrogen protects against heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and osteoporosis in women. Estrogen prevents symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, temperature disregulation, mood swings, urogenital atrophy, decreased libido and depression. Estrogen lowers LDL cholesterol and raises HDL (the good cholesterol).      

PROGESTERONE      Replacement with natural progesterone protects against uterine and breast cancer plus osteoporosis. Progesterone reduces symptoms of menopause. Progesterone occurs naturally with estrogen and should be prescribed concurrently to balance estrogen.      

MELATONIN      This hormone is produced by the pineal gland and declines significantly by age 40. Melatonin controls circadium rhythm and sleep cycles. TESTOSTERONE      This hormone is necessary in both men and women and declines steadily after age 30. Testosterone is responsible for sustaining libido, muscle mass and immunity. It protects against heart disease in men plus the degeneration of muscle, bone, tendon and joints. It is a great mood enhancer and imparts a sense of wellbeing in aging men and women.      

THYROID HORMONE      This metabolic hormone decreases steadily with age. Lack of thyroid hormone results in cold intolerance, fatigue, lassitude, weight gain, increased cholesterol, thin and dry skin, hair loss, thin and brittle nails. Replenishment results in reversal of these symptoms plus increased energy and metabolism.      

PREGNENOLONE      Decline of this hormone occurs after age 30. This hormone aids in cellular repair of the central nervous system and is the most potent memory enhancer of all the hormones.

Seems I can never get the right sun block - too thick, too greasy, too zinc-y, too watery...Yes, I have a few faves, and now I am adding to the mix one from my fave line, ERNO LASZLO.

The Mathematics of a Beautiful Face is what Rand exudes, knows, teaches and performs. I first read about Rand in a magazine while sweating out last night’s Ben and Jerry's on the elliptical – Vogue or Elle or something. It was a piece on how brilliant he was at doing things like fixing bad Botox and overly-injected faces – basically undoing the hideous anti-handiwork of others. This fascinated me. Could there be a bigger fear in life?

Ok may be a few, I get it, but let’s just pretend for a second that this really is as important as I am going to make it sound...

So I went to meet Rand. And he filled my life with all sorts of new joys and well, fillers. First I tested the waters with a little old school basic forehead Botox, to get a feel for his aesthetic. I loved it. He goes for an organic, natural look. He will not freeze your face like a daytime TV actress or one of those freaky looking women binging on Angelina Yogurt after a facelift consult on Bedford Drive. He will not erase every little crow's foot. He likes expression and realness. This is the wave of the future after years of that frozen Housewives of Orange County look that gave Botox a bad name. No, no, Rand puts the ‘balanced’ back into Botox.

Then we got creative. He told me that a little Botox to those muscle-cord-bandy-things on my neck would soften the appearance of tension and take yet another few years off.  Obviously, I didn’t wait a beat. Now I am totally hooked on it. It’s so incredibly subtle yet makes a huge difference.

Then I wanted some filler action. Restylane, Juvederm. Anything with three syllables and youth enhancing properties, shoot me up please.

 “Do your math on me!” is what I believe I said to Rand. Rand is a Beauty Scientist; he knows the matrix of facial perfection and will give you just the slightest tweaks with these fillers to balance things out in the most natural, non-obvious way possible. No one ever notices anything other than, ‘Wow, Em, you look friggen amazing!’  What he does is beyond subtle and totally non-Bev-Hills looking 'work'.  I recall a needle to the nasal labial folds, some action under my eyes, a squirt to my chin, somewhere on my cheek and maybe the lip lines above my top lip?? There was no Angelina Jolie lip plumping for me (on my face, he said, no way!), no fake-cheekbone puffing, just a little juice where that cruel mistress Age was starting to take her hollow grip on things. Watch out, missy, Rand will get you, he will!

Rand is a master. Did I mention there was not a moment of bruising anywhere?! Not even the delicate under eye skin. Nothing. I could have left and shot a movie that afternoon. And he is so deliciously charming, sweet and fun that you really will have to re-do your annual budget to fit him into your monthly beauty calendar. You will start making up things to do just to go back because whenever you leave you are simply guaranteed to look better and let’s face it more importantly, younger and prettier.

Working as an actress in front of the camera keeps a beauty regime on its toes.  You can't just sit around and let the grey grow in and the crows fit build nests around your eyes.  You've gotta be on top of this stuff!  Spas, treatments, top of the line products -- ahh, nirvana...
